Kayagum which was invented in the early 6th century is one of musical instruments with a long history in the world. As its soft and gentle tone blends well with the voices of people and produces unique national timbre, it was widely disseminated as a representative musical instrument favoured by the Koreans. In the era of the Workers’ Party of Korea it was further improved to meet the modern aesthetic tastes by preserving its original shape and tones. It can be used in executing any musical pieces perfectly as it meets the national sentiments of the Korean people and has a great power of expression. Today it plays an important role in musical performance such as solo, ensemble and concert, for its traditional playing techniques and peculiar tones.
